Michael Owen is a young writer who, after a couple of discreet works but unpretentious is to deal with the crisis of classical inspiration. Add to this that Michael is not what we might call a balanced and emotionally healthy person, having to deal with an experience of adolescent trauma, illusions and ambitions dashed, frustrated love and family conflicts, and you can easily understand that it is not at all strange that spends most of her days locked in a room watching movies obsessively on videotape. On this basis, is part of the disturbing element of the story, namely that the offer is made to write the historical record one of the most famous families, wealthy and influential of England in the second half of the twentieth century: the Winshaw. Those behind the facade of respectable economic shapers of destiny - the country's social, hide a common desire to meet their lower desires: the desire for media coverage to the greed of money, sexual exploitation by the instincts of the masses. Inseritisi each in a pivotal position of power games of the modern world (politics, finance, trade, industry, communication), they weave their plots to encourage one another and draw more benefits at the expense of unsuspecting citizens managed. And the few members of the family less affected by this paucity of mind are relegated to the limbo of insanity, loneliness and death, depending on which of these opportunities is more easy to achieve. Throughout history, we see Michael swing between his personal hardship and horrors perpetrated by members of the Winshaws distracted or under the indifferent eyes of the world, but at first there seems to be much more than a mere chronicle, in his words. However, soon the young writer (and we with him) will have to discover that most, if not all, of what concerns his life so far and its very existence to the world is linked to the family of which he is writing, and events fruit that has always considered the case could actually be pieces of a complex woven design from someone, and we could have devastating repercussions on its future.
As is rightly explained on the back cover, it is not easy to give a definition to this masterpiece novel. Family saga from yellow, via the novel denounces and historical chronicle, Jonathan Coe weaves a plot that the cross-section photographs of England after World War II to the nineties, interspersed with autobiographical elements and great emotional momentum (it's just me opinion, but I suspect that much of what is Michael Owen is part of what was Jonathan Coe). A novel where nothing, not even the most marginal of paragraphs, it is left to chance, and where reality and fiction merge to become indistinguishable from each other. A novel that should not be missing in the library of any fan of the concept of 'narrative'.
unusual and exciting was the presence of a person at my door, but that pleasure was tempered not only dall'inopportuno timing of the interruption, but also by the feeling, stubborn and disturbing, have already seen this woman, so much so that at any moment I could recognize it and even recall his name. In his left hand clutching a sheet of A4, folded in half, and the right hung on the side of the restless, as if trying to hide in a pocket.
